Removable rear cover drum pads

I decided i’m going to cut vents in these drum pads to emit LED light from inside. These will have small esp8266 chips (i’ve been using the Wemos D1 mini for this application). They will receive information via wifi over artnet to display relevant video from my Arkaos program.

these pad rear covers separate from the strike pads.
my small lexan blade was enough to release the plastic hooks under the border
how slick! these pop right off, will make painting so much easier. they’re also surprisingly sturdy.
i carved out a small area for a power socket to pass thru.
you can see here how i mounted it. it’s probably a half inch bit on the outside and a 10mm for the jack.
we are testing the fitting of these coroplast pads that the leds will ride on under the cover. the leds are shown here face up which is backwards to how we will mount them.
the inside of the pad. these are remarkably sturdy. take note the particle board inside, it must be 3/8th” thick.
the LEDs are pretty slim, maybe a half inch wide and 8th inch thick.
i taped off my work area to help prevent chipout and also to make my marks on what we are actually going to do
i’m using ws2812b’s at 144 leds/meter. I can comfortably get 4, 6, and 8 leds on each row, respectively. The red marks indicate what i’ll be cutting into.
